About PCs and laptops - 2

Continuing from earlier -

In Linux Lite I could bring back gnome online accout using the terminal by typing
gnome-control-center online-accounts

Once that is done go ahead and sync your google account. And this brought back GDrive into file system.

Latest here is: I made a backup using a utility called Timeshift (System restore Utility) today successfully - works much better than Restore point in Windows. Actually there are many Office apps in Linux with different styles. I use Libre Office suite which is as good or even better than MS Office. For videos, there is nothing better than VLC player. It can stream videos too.

For compressing files, Linux has its own built-in compression, whereas for Windows WinZIP app is not free; there is one free utility called 7zip.

Learning and using Linux - there is only one way to start-- just install a good distro and start using it. A slight difficulty will be usage of the Terminal, for which I had to read and find out. The rest of the things are not difficult.

Every day I am learning new things. Today I learned how to publish your GDocs as a link or in other ways - go to Gdrive, select a file you want to publish and go to the File menu at the top left corner, from the dropdown menu, choose publish - Publish as a link or embed a link. Link can be pasted to FB or Whatsapp and embed by pasting to a webpage.

In Linux Mint, we have both usb formatting and usb writing apps, whereas in Linux Lite only an outside app for usb writing - BALENA ETCHER - not as good as Mint's built-in app.

The latest I learned is about https://www.onworks.net/os-distributions/ubuntu-based It is like virtual machine where one can run any OS, even with a windows theme. This is an application in GDrive - I just wanted to experiment and was happy it succeeded. Go to GDrive and click on settings and then to application control where you can see its page and link.

GIMP is an image manipulating application and is an excellent app with which you can manipulate any aspect of images of any format. I have only experimented with it.

CALIBRE : this is another very useful application to convert different formats of Ebooks. eg .mobi is suitable for Kindle and .epub for others. In Linux Calibre can be installed only through Terminal and takes a long time to download. It is a heavy app and takes time to open also. It is a super application with lots of functions.

Using the cloud, one needs only a browser to do 80% of computer work. Regarding bookmarks I use an online one called Atavi, for which one can go to atavi.com and register. I have been using it for years. Another useful browser addon is Lastpass - automatically save IDs and Passwords. Have been using this also for years.
