POPN and Arcade

POP Nambiar is Padmanabhan Nambiar - my daughter Anju's father-in-law. In Arcade apartments, he was our immediate downstairs neighbour in "NALINAM". He is from Othayoth family and was working in Indian Air Force. Joined quite early and so college education was denied. He is a store-house of interesting military stories. His wife Nalini died early due to Ovarian Ca wnen Anoop was in XIth std. They are two children - Anoop's elder sister Sreekala is in Hyderabad - she is an anaesthetist, married to Subramanyeswar Rao, a surgical oncologist. They were classmates and have two daughters - the elder one Aiswarya getting married in this June, younger Jojo now an army medical officer. POP's family is in Kannur - his sister is there. We had been to his place in Kannur, and wife's place in Cherukunnu.

A side story is that when we were in Calicut and started to attend Sai Samithi, we heard about Prof Padmanabha Kurup - a great Malayalam orator. He was publishing a book on Sathya Sai Baba and the function was in Cherukunnu, for which we were invited. So I took Prof and family in my car to Cherukunnu and returned after the function. This Prof's daughter is still in Calicut - a staunch Sai devotee - so too her 3 daughters - all married.

POP's wife's 3 sisters had Ca, and her mother too. POP is likely to move from Calicut to Hyderabad because of being all alone at Arcade.

Ajitukumar is our plumber cum electrician and a great Sai devotee doing excellent Seva. He is an officebearer in Samithi. He told me his marriage was Sai's Sankalpam and was a late marriage. His wife can't talk or hear. He has a pleasant personality and always helps other people. He has 2 sons. Ajith stays close to our Arcade apts.

Sunitha has a pleasant disposition and helping attitude. Her husband Sabari Girish is in Singapore. Before that, he was in the middle-east in shipping. He continues the same job now in Singapore. Due to Corona he has not come home for more than a year. Vishnu, their elder son, is an engineering student. Their daughter is Visma (Ammini) also an engineering student. Sunitha often goes to Manjeri, their home town - her mother is there. Her father is no more. She has an elder sister who is also in Manjeri. As a neighbour Sunitha was very very helpful to us.

Our Arcade house 'Sairam' is empty now. Our banker Sindhu Vinod has taken it over, about which I mentioned earlier. I had installed a Solar water heating system there, which I gave to Ajithkumar. The corporation water is in my name there, and will have to be changed. Apart from a well, we had installed a deep well too. Corporation water is an added security during summer if the well water stops.

Our outside neighbour is Dr Joseph, who has a separate two storied house - a very friendly family. He has two Doctor daughters, both still studying. Drs Sindhu and Jinesh, we heard, have moved out from their downstairs house at Arcade to their own recently built house nearby.

About my brothers

As mentioned previously , we were originally 14 siblings. 5 died - these were all my elder sisters - much before I was born. I have only heard about them. So my parents were earnestly praying for a girl and then Kamakshichechi was born 1934. Eldest was Ramankutty chettan employed in the registration department. Though his was a small job he was very satisfied and happy mainly because of Karthyayani chedathi amma who managed their family very well. Edathiyamma (Elder sister-in-law) was our eldest maternal uncle's (Krishnamman's) daughter. She was very beautiful and theirs was a love marriage. Their eldest child was Valsala, then Ambika and later Malini and last their last was son Rajan. He stays at their house now. Malini had CA (cancer) and is no more. Ambika is happily married to Siddhan in Bangalore. Valsala was married to Vijayan from FACT . Vijayan expired a few years back due to a cardiac attack. They have 3 girls and a boy. All well settled. Father, temples and Chakranysharadi

Father There was a request from a friend to write more about my father"s association with the Cochin royal family. My father was a munsiff and the king ( Madiraasiyil theeppetta thampuran ) Rama Varma selected my father, noting his honesty, straight-forwardness, integrity and other good qualities. The King wanted him for all purposes and made him Sarvaadhi kaari. He held that post for 14 long years. Mother used to tell the stories of life inside the Kottaram (palace) to us later. Our whole family had a cushy life then. Food and accommodation were free and whatever food was made for the King had to be tasted by Sarvaadhi. Father could have saved a lot, but he felt he had to repay all the loans his uncle had brought upon himself for looking after them in childhood. Even the Pisharoty Munsiff's house had to be pawned for repaying the loans. So finally my father didn't have much savings, which caused him to have depressive illness.  I remember him feeling sorry for that state...

sights to see at Calicut

There are many temples in Calicut - for an Ambalavaasi that is important. Pisharikav temple is very near our Arcade Apartments (Quilandy Pisharikav is different). Another nearby temple here is Ganapathikav temple. Formerly, we regularly worshipped at Sreekanteshwara Temple near stadium and occasionally THALI. There are many other temples in Calicut.  Near Arcade, at East Hill junction, there is a museum - VK Krishna Menon museum . You might know that VK Krishna Menon's old thravad house is in Panniyankara, Calicut. i don't know whether it still exists. other interesting places are Sarovaram park, pretty long beach, Tagore centenary hall, superb medical college campus, Kappad beach where Vasco Da Gama landed, etc. Wayanad is also easily approachable, with many tourist attractions.
