Mohan and Mankav

I must write something about my favourite driver-cum-mechanic, Mohan. When I first met him he was in Naveen motors workshop. On our first meeting itself, I could understand that he was a good mechanic. From then on, I used to call only him for my car driving, repair etc. He was well built and could do any heavy work. I gradually started to call him for all my household works and other errands. He would happily and successfully complete any work at any time. We got his help for shifting house from Chakkorathukulam Sairam to Arcade 4th floor at Edakkad.

It was difficult to carry our large heavy Godrej almirah upstairs. So I gave it to him. We managed to take the small almirah upstairs. Not one item got damaged in the shifting. Mohan was familiar to all at Arcade and was useful for all.

Unfotunately, Mohan developed a malignant tumour in one kidney which was removed successfully. For a few years he was symptom free. Then he developed lung secondaries. Before the renal catastrophe, he developed Cancer of large intestine. A two stage surgery had to be done and in 2 months he came out successfully. He worked as my driver for 1-2 yrs and then the renal problem raised its head. After the lung secondaries he had brain secondaries from which he gradually went down. When he died, I felt miserable. But there is no point - nobody lives forever.

Mohan had two sons - elder one was Nithin and younger, Adarsh. Nithin is in Dubai, a bank employee. Adarsh has a small accounting job. He has a working wife and a daughter. He and Vilasini, their mother, are staying in Mohan's house. Mahesh is Mohan's younger brother. He used to come to me for certificates etc and is working in LIC. Whenever I have any LIC issue, he comes to help. He also helps like Mohan for any odd jobs, plumbing, drawer lock repair etc. He is a good electrician also. Being in LIC, he has lots of contacts.

Rema's old school classmate Laxmikkutty's husband Balakrishna Menon and I were thick friends. They live in Mankav, Calicut. We were friends since 1965, even before their wedding. They have three daughters, all well settled - Rema, Uma, and Vidya. Uma's husband Ashok is an all India irrigation engineer. Sandhya (Rema)'s husband is Madhu, running a high class laboratory. Vidya's husband Sathish does some business. He recently had a heart attack and recovered well.
